It's misfiring, and I'm the one that's supposed to fix it. I'll freeze my hands off in this weather if I work on it outside.

...and one of these?

Then rent it out to friends for camping trips and such-like. Working on cars in the cold is not fun.

Of course, I don't get cold where I'm working on 'em, but sometimes when both hands are busy while I'm under the car, a mosquito settles right onto my eye just where you can't blink it away, and theres nothing.I.can.do. I have pushed my face into a crossbrace before because I lost it once.. wife wanted to know who'd hit me.

Can't you get a portable heater? Or go into a underground parking and go to a spot with no cameras.

My e90 ran really rough when the plugs were off by a smidge. Like a barely noticeable one. Damn thing.

One thing I will suggest is to check your ground points. I've had 5 or 6 people have misfire issues (WRXs, STIs, my 2.0t Audi,) and they were all fixed with cleaned up ground points, bot on the battery and all the motor to body or bat to body ground points.

If that doesn't work I try cleaning the coils, alot of carbon can build up on the contacts, whether coilpack or plug wire.

Then I check the plugs and make sure they're all looking correct. Worst case it's been a bad plug, or I had to do something weird like change the fuel filter for whatever reason.

Either way, start with ground points. Anything but clean can cause issues.

No major deformation of the passenger area? Not even a shattered windshield? Wow.

We have a portable heater for working in the garage. Pulling the front of the car into the garage isn't very possible, since both his motorcycles take up all the space.
My godfather has space in his garage, and I worked in it before, it's very well insulated vs our uninsulated garage.

I'm quite impressed as well.

Maybe this is a frame taken before the shock rippled that far?

Since it's a Bimmer, check your OBD2. I love (and horribly miss) OBD2.

On the fairly realistic chance that it doesn't tell you anything (other than the cap'n obvious "misfire" code), I'd change out those plugs. A quick google aught to tell you which manufacturer and part number you'll want, and, generally speaking, they're about $7 a pop. USUALLY they aren't too hard to do (like, take off two 8mm philips head screws on a coilpack, pull the coilpack out, unscrew with a socket, reverse those steps, repeat 5 times).

If it ain't the plugs, it's probably the coils. If it ain't the coils, it's probably the ignitor. If it ain't the ignitor, it's probably a compression issue. If it ain't a compression issue, it's probably the ECU...And if it's none of those things, then kill it with fire, because all hope is lost.

Well, then, if you are inclined to save money (Some might call it the "cheap way" which wouldn't be a compliment...but still an option), then changing JUST the number 2 plug, and potentially, the number 2 coilpack MIIIIIGHT be enough.

Generally though, people seem to treat spark plugs like brake bulbs: If you're gonna get all geared up to change one, might as well change em all.

I think it's about time spark plugs get replaced, I don't remember it being replaced in the 4 years he's had the car.

Hopefully that's all it is. Best of luck.
